BY EARLY 1979, to the outside world The Clash were coasting. In their three short years of existence they had signed to Sony for a reported £100,000, released a definitive punk rock debut that went on to became the largest-selling import in America of its time and followed it up relatively quickly with the more polished but straight-forward sounding Give 'Em Enough Rope, a more obvious stab at mainstream success.
