IN OCTOBER 1976 Nick Lowe produced the single 'New Rose' in an eight-track recording studio. It was the first U.K. punk sound on vinyl, preceeding the Sex Pistols' first single by six weeks. It sold 4,000 on mail order only and made the lower reaches of the chart when U.A. took over distribution.
