The Doobie Brothers: Toulouse Street
Jim Esposito, Zoo World, 30 September 1972
THERE IS SOMETHING strangely deceptive about the Doobie Brothers. First of all, their name conjures up images of Maynard G. Krebs, the ultimate beatnik and co-star but main attraction of a relatively obscure situation comedy that was stricken from the airwaves eons ago. On top of that, their name, when considered in conjunction with the folksy, revivalist sound of the album's opening cut, 'Listen to The Music' – which has been getting lots of airplay – seemed to smack of a down-home, local boys type outfit in the fine Southern tradition of the Allman Brothers, who, no matter how hard they try and how well they do it, seem to constantly remind one of the fallen Confederacy.
