IN 1976 THE WORD was out that David Bowie was slumming it in Berlin. Rejecting the life of a rock and roll star, which was costing him his sanity and his health, he had moved from Los Angeles to a low-rent area of West Berlin, taken up painting and was living the life of a Bohemian exile.
