AS ANYONE FAMILIAR with the Motown fairytale can tell you, it was Diana Ross who discovered Michael Jackson. She was performing at a 1968 fundraiser for Richard Hatch, soon to become the first black mayor of Gary, Indiana, when she spotted local act The Jackson 5 down at the bottom of the bill her Supremes were headlining.
