The Jazzy Funkateers: Life after James Brown and P-Funk
Hank Bordowitz, American Visions, Winter 1993
AS THE SEVEN musicians on the stage at Tramps in New York launch into a instrumental version of 'Cold Sweat', six hundred voices in the crowd roar as one. No mere bunch of players offering homage to James Brown, the three horn players calling the tunes on stage also pay tribute to themselves as they climb to the top of the song's hook. If these three guys didn't give birth to the funk with the Godfather of Soul, they certainly acted as midwives.
