STUCK IN a jam on the Hollywood Freeway, staring for five miles at a yellow Smiley bumper sticker telling me to have a nice day, listening to yellow Smiley music on the LA radio station telling me pretty much the same thing, I'm wondering how the City Of Laughter managed to cough up a band like the Motels. Not only that, but how the hell did they manage to get a hit.
