The Residents used to be such irritating misfits, what with their art school disguises and grating resentful satires of '60s pop music. Nerds and outsiders aplenty flocked to the anonymous San Franciscans, attracted by the beautiful-ugly spectacle of uprising against the music industry's traditional co-opting of rebellion.
