The Stones: It Wasn't Only Rock 'n Roll (And I Liked It)

Paul Williams, Crawdaddy!, November 1974

IN EARLY 1967 a rumor shot through the Crawdaddy office that Brian Jones had left the Stones. Tim Jurgens and I agreed that, if true, this meant the end of the Rolling Stones as we knew them, and therefore, probably, the end of Western Civilization. But it did explain one thing: the indescribably sweet sadness in Jagger's voice, penetrating several layers of reality, at the end of 'Something Happened to Me Yesterday': (if you're on your bike, wear white). Of course! It was because Between the Buttons was destined to be the last Stones album, and 'Something' the last song on that album, and somehow they knew and we knew that when they said Goodnight at the end of that acid-soaked song, they were saying good-bye for good.
