SPURRED INTO ACTION by Beatlemania and making their chart debut with a Bob Dylan cover, there initially wasn't a huge world of difference between The Turtles and their similarly California-based contemporaries The Byrds. But whereas Roger McGuinn's men built upon a folk-rock template and became one of the most influential groups of the 60s, The Turtles never really got the acclaim they deserved.
