The White Stripes: De Stijl (Sympathy for the Record Industry)
The Rev. Al Friston, Rock's Backpages, June 2001
JACK AND MEG White are the future of the very industry for which their label espouses such compassion. These Detroit-based guitar/drum siblings strip Jon Spencer-style blues-rock down to minimal component parts thatll rock your socks off. Bassless, theyre the Archies crossed with Panther Burns, and theyre so-fisticated enough to equate the aesthetic ideals of this De Stijl dude with the raw grit of Son House and Blind Willie McTell. Très cool.
