The Who: Madison Square Garden, New York NY

Arthur Levy, Zoo World, 18 July 1974

HOSTILE YET oblivious to their circumstances (the cavernous Madison Square Garden), the Who transcended their retrograde Heil sound system for almost two hours on the first of four nights to a sellout crowd who themselves seemed representative of the three generations of rock 'n roll played by the band. On their feet cheering and stomping for the bad boys of Shepherd's Bush, from the moment Keith Moon and Roger Daltrey somersaulted onstage and kicked into 'I Can't Explain', 'Summertime Blues' (fondly dedicated to the old Fillmore East), and Mose Allison's 'Young Man's Blues', the crowd quickly compensated for, in enthusiasm, whatever deficiencies were noticeable.
