Tower Of Power: Bump City

ANYBODY OUT THERE listen to rock on A.F.N. at all? – well, if you do, you'll know Tower of Power: Tony Pigg, an FM D-J in San Francisco, is still playing the hell out of a track called 'Sparkling in the Sand' on his 11-12 pm weekday chunk of airtime. Whether out of good taste or plain hometown chauvinism I don't know – for T. of P. are indeed from S.F., and the track in question came from their first album East Bay Grease, on Bill Graham's San Francisco label, through Atlantic – 18 months old and still unreleased here. I never heard the rest of that album; but like Boz Scaggs' brilliant records, this second LP by the band will probably be huge in the Bay area, without meaning much on the East Coast, let alone across the Atlantic. Four plays ago I'd have consigned it to the short cuts section – but the damn thing gets better all the time!
