THE SEGREGATION OF music played a significant role in supporting South Africa's post-war National Party policy of "separate development". This little-known facet of apartheid has unintentionally bequeathed a glorious legacy of recorded indigenous music to the new South Africa and to the world. Never intended to be heard outside strictly-defined localities, the South African Broadcasting Corporation's internal archive of recordings is at last being explored and made available to international audiences.
