WAYNE Shorter used to be introduced by Art Blakey in the 1950s like this: "This is Wayne Shorter, ladies and genulmen... ‘cos he’s shorter than me!" God only knows what the then budding sax-player thought of that little quip, but remembering it at a distance of a couple of decades or so, he falls about laughing in his leather armchair.
