West Bruce & Laing: Why Dontcha

John Tobler, Let It Rock, March 1973

I DON'T WANT to be boring, but there's a whole heap of over obvious things to say about a band like this, just a couple of examples being that Jack Bruce is returning to the format which made him the most money, or that Leslie West has found a good bass player to replace Felix Pappalardi. Both of the above are, of course, true, and the record reflects exactly what you think it might, that is, some superspeed heroic guitaring from Big L.; Bruce's always excellent bass, lines; vocals of both good and average quality (the former from Bruce, the latter from West); and pretty neat drumming from Corky Laing. If you really need a sample of W.B. & L.'s music in your friendly local shop try 'The Doctor' or 'Third Degree'.
