AT THE CLOSE of the '60s, the power of America's rock bible Rolling Stone was immense. Entire careers hinged on the opinions of the magazine's esteemed critics. In May 1968, when a Stone writer called Eric Clapton "the master of the blues cliché", the rock god was thrown into such despair that he immediately decided to bring his supergroup Cream to an end.
