I was sitting in my den, as I often do, playing records and making notes for an article, when something clicked unexpectedly in my mind. In the grip of inspiration I started pulling records off of shelves, listening to things I hadn’t heard in a long time, trying to pin down a vague impression that was slowly clarifying itself into an idea.
