Oasis: Be Here Now

Charles Shaar Murray Mojo

WHAT ARE Oasis for? They were Built To Be Big. Their Long-Awaited-All-Important-Third-Album, Be Here Now, is about as big as a rock record can get. It is – as they say in New York City – yuge. It's monumental. It's so heavy you'll need a forklift truck to get it home. Slap it on your stereo and it arrives in your living-room like the Grand Canyon, built to scale, constructed entirely out of road-scuffed Marshall stacks and covered in mud. The first time you play it, it's all too much for you to take. All you hear are guitars. Millions of the fuckers, with Liam whingeing away somewhere in the middle distance. Overdubs up the ying-yong. The sort of stuff you can only do with unlimited studio time, unlimited numbers of tracks, and unlimited quantities of cocaine.
