Wishbone Ash
Steven Rosen, Guitar Player, June 1974 ANDY POWELL, TED TURNER, and Martin Turner form the front instrumental line of Englands Wishbone Ash, a quartet (rounded out with Steve Upton on drums) which has fully realized the capabilities of the electric instrument. Guitarists Powell and Turner (Ted) have combined their different styles to form n unique synthesis of raw and economically laid-back playing. The basis of the Ash sound is the melody which is rearranged, transposed, and augmented by the twin guitars which often team up in harmonies of thirds, fourths, fifths, and even sixths. Bassist Martin Turner, too, plays an interesting role in the group as his lines are quite, often used as the third or fifth in a melody line rather than just as the root or bottom of a chord.
