IN THE OPENING minutes of todd Haynes's Velvet Goldmine, a gaggle of lads hurtle down a drab city street, tottering in their platforms, clad in waisted, flared polyester and cheesecloth – the space-age urchin uniform of the time. As their scarves flap around their eyeliner, you have a perfect definition of glam's allure: outrage, gang solidarity, rapid motion, androgyny, but most of all, glee.
