Vivien Goldman
VIVIEN GOLDMAN is a writer, broadcaster and musician who has devoted her work to Afro-Caribbean and global music links and perspectives. A pioneering journalist during the 1970s 'Golden Age' of conscious reggae and militant punk, she drew on a lengthy association with Bob Marley to write his first biography, Soul Rebel, Natural Mystic, and worked closely with visionaries like the inventor of harmolodics, Ornette Coleman, and Afrobeat creator, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti. Described by Rolling Stone as "a small miracle," her most recent book, The Black Chord (Universe/Rizzoli, with photographer David Corio) traces connections between African and Diaspora music. Publications in which she has appeared include Interview, the Village Voice, Rolling Stone, Spin, the Daily Telegraph and Harpers Bazaar. After presenting for The Tube and The Late Show (with Charlie Gillett) she co-produced and conceived the groundbreaking 1980s TV show, 'Big World Café,' combining world and Anglophone music. Her numerous TV credits include scripting VH1s acclaimed first 100 Greatest of Rock and The 1970s series. As a songwriter, she has released tracks with trip-hop pioneers Massive Attack, UK hiphop innovators, Cold Cut, and Japanese symphonist, Ryuichi Sakamoto. A founding member of the avant-garde pop combo, The Flying Lizards, her solo single, Launderette, composed with Aswad bassie, George Oban, and co-produced with Johnny Rotten, has recently been re-issued on the Anti NY CD. Its rave reviews include Le Monde's "a woman of artistic dimensions and significant politics who helped evolve the New Wave," and the Village Voice, who called it "a disarming li'l dub song about dating and washing." Goldman lives in Manhattan where she writes books, songs and screenplays.
