Ava Cherry: Bowie Backups and Beyond

Mark Leviton, BAM, 19 November 1982

LOSANGELES — Back-up singers don't always rise to distinction, but vocalist Ava Cherry, who worked extensively with David Bowie on the pivotal Diamond Dogs tour and Young Americans album, has made the transition with panache and only a few bruises. Her new album, Streetcar Named Desire, was released this fall by Capitol, and it's not surprising to hear her putting out a strong, contemporary blend of R&B and new wave, and projecting a strong visual image. Her previous experience with a solo record on Curtom/RSO left her sadder but wiser, and she's determined to make this second album shot work.
