Billy Paul: Philly Billy

Tony Cummings, Black Music, January 1974

'ME & MRS. JONES' is an instant recall disc. When it slides provocatively out of a car radio or a super hi-fi the listener will immediately picture the instant he first heard that slyly insinuating mixture of iced vocal and emotive story line. In a decade's time rock archeologists will be placing the disc in their lists of 'all time great pop records'. But, of course the magic that 'Me & Mrs. Jones' emotes is not something of by-chance spontaneity but the fruition of one of Philadelphia's longer partnerships: Gamble/Huff... and Billy Paul.
