Björk — "I only really grew up two years ago."

Martin Aston, Select, January 1994

NOBODY WILL DARE SAY 'elfin' again... Few had much time for Bjork and her quirky solo project this time last year. There she goes, they sniggered — silly little Sugarcube girl making a tax loss LP with the bloke who used to be in Soul II Soul. But boy, did they eat their words when Debut arrived. It was ace — crazy techno disco, heart-wringing ballads and every virtue of genius pop on glorious display. Within months Mrs Walnut Whip Hairdo was on every magazine cover, opening for U2 and doing your actual film themes even. Meanwhile Björk dub plates bombarded the dance underground. She was all you'd want from pop in one effortlessly groovy package.
