JOHN FOGERTY became a hero by living in the Bay Area for 20 years and never becoming a hippie. He didn’t desert his rock ‘n’ roll roots under psychedelic pressure but now, for some reason, he’s decided he needs some new ones after all: he’s joined the current trail back to the country, Blue Ridge Rangers is a collection of Fogerty’s favourite country songs — ballads, gospel, rockabilly — played, arranged and produced entirely by himself. For the most part it seems a pretty pointless exercise.
