A TOUGH-LOOKING character in a back-to-front baseball cap slaps hard around a semi-circle of conga drums. An older man, small and self-contained, who could easily pass for a retired bank clerk, plucks an answering figure from an enormous double bass – a booming, bending sound rising to an insisent twanging that wavers in the air.
