IT'S ALWAYS embarrassed Englishmen like Mick Jagger and Eric Clapton that they got rich by showing Americans how palatable their native R&B and blues were. Rockpile's Nick Lowe and Dave Edmunds are neither especially rich nor embarrassment-prone, but the way they've nurtured such a pure American talent as Carlene Carter ought to make somebody squirm.
