Chaka Demus and Pliers, General Levy: Brixton Academy, London

Caroline Sullivan, The Guardian, 18 July 1994

THE RANKS of policemen who materialise outside Brixton Academy during shows by black artists were absent Friday night. Clearly, they had been informed that no one was likely to misbehave at this gig. Chaka Demus And Pliers are a Jamaican ragga duo, but they are free of the macho pugnaciousness that lands ragga in the tabloid headlines. Their popful version of the genre has bred four hit singles, and is suitable for all the family, who duly turned up.
