Coltrane, Davis, Monk, Mingus

Fred Schruers, Rolling Stone, 11 November 1999

JOHN COLTRANE, Miles Davis, Thelonious Monk and Charles Mingus were not just virtuoso musicians but path-breaking composers and bandleaders who shaped the sound of modern jazz. Their sons — Ravi Coltrane, 34; Erin Davis, 28; Eric Mingus, 35; and T.S. Monk, 49 — meet for the first time at New York's famed Village Vanguard. They stand in the shadow of a daunting legacy. "The worst thing I could do," says Mingus, "would be to regurgitate what my father did. He did what he did with his music; I have no desire to do that."
