Creedence Clearwater Revival, Quintessence: Royal Albert Hall, London

2019 Update: I was crazy for Creedence. For The Guardian I reviewed Bayou Country in February 1969, saying "I rate John Fogarty as high for assurance and excitement as Eric Burdon in the old days". (This piece is in Rock's Backpages). In September 1969 I wrote that "Green River doesn't so much sound like Elvis as feel like him. The comparison is that both share Memphis". In February 1970 I wrote of Willy and the Poorboys "The guitar work is inspired by Chuck Berry. And that's no accident. Berry was one of the first American blacks to assert — in his music — not that he deserved fair treatment (that implies inferiority, even if only of power) but that he owned America, as much as any other man. He didn't drive down a transcontinental highway in his Mustang on sufferance".
