Curtis Mayfield, Bloodstone: Rainbow Theatre, London

David Nathan, Blues & Soul, 4 February 1972

CONFUSION OVER the starting time of the first Curtis Mayfield performance at a British theatre did not auger well for the evening and the additional lateness of Bloodstone resulted in a restless audience on Sunday January 23 at The Rainbow. If the show should have started at 7.30 p.m. it was a little over an hour late; if it was supposed to have kicked off at 8.00 p.m. then it was nearly forty-five minutes late. Either way, enduring reggae and, far worse, progressive music over the theatre's sound system was unsettling to say the least. Surely, they could have arranged it so that we got to hear some soul — one Atlantic album just ain't enough!
