Dr John: Dingwalls, London

Max Bell, The Times, 5 August 1983

DESPITE AN unfortunate illness, rumours of Dr John's early retirement have been greatly exaggerated. As if to emphasize his recent recovery New Orleans's favourite white son did has darndest to turn Dingwalls into an approximation of his home-town Tipitina's. But then a visit from a pianist as well liked as Mac Rebbenack is always a cause for celebration. On this occasion Dr John was assisted by the sympathetic sounds of Chris Barber's band, their sax, bass, guitar and drums being used to add tone and texture to the main man's versatile rhythm and blues.
