GAZING NOSTALGICALLY at some classic Ready Steady Go! footage recently, I mused on the subject of versatile female singers. Where is the Sandie, the Cilla, the Lulu of the '80s? Relief for our chanteuse-starved ears, I realised, comes courtesy of Annie Lennox, surely the most expressive popular vocalist (along with George, natch) currently putting her nodules at risk. She seems to be all of them rolled into one.
