Gary Stewart: Honky-Tonk Puree

Nick Tosches, Penthouse, February 1976

HONKY-TONK, the most profane form of country music, came out of Texas in the mid-thirties. It spread from the beer and punch-out joints of east Texas's oil-boom towns, and within a decade it not only dominated country music, but also produced some of the biggest national hits, such as Al Dexter's 'Pistol Packin' Mama' and Ted Daffan's 'Born to Lose'.
