G.E. Smith: An Ace Axeman Steps Out Front

Fred Schruers, Rolling Stone, 6 August 1981

NEW YORK CITY — "All I've ever wanted to call myself is a player," says unsung guitar legend G.E. Smith as we sit down to talk in a posh, glassy Chinese restaurant on Fifty-seventh Street, "as distinct from a musician. When I used to play resorts in the Poconos, I made sure to sit next to a friend who played bass. He'd read the charts and yell the changes at me as the song was going by. He was a real musician."
