George Melly: The Venue, London

Mick Brown, The Guardian, 3 October 1980

ONE CAN think of few people other than George Melly who could spend the early part of an evening speaking eloquently on a television literary programme about the splendour of the Mona Lisa, and then turn up on stage later that same night in a fedora camping it up to a song written by a little known blues singer, Gertrude "Ma" Rainey, called 'I'm Gonna Catch You With Your Breeches Down'. It is a testament to Melly's singular personality that one activity should appear a wholly natural complement to the other.
