George Michael: Listen Without Prejudice Vol 1 (Epic)

David Quantick, Vox, October 1990

"I WAS EVERY little hungry schoolgirl's pride and joy and I guess that was enough for me" burbles George on 'Freedom '90', a tune about growing up as a pop star. The lyrics are all about there being someone inside George who has never been seen and how we don't belong to each other, the usual self-aggrandising drivel. The whole thing is set to a scratching wah-wah guitar, an equally itchy rhythm and a blatant lift of the "Freedom!" chorus from Aretha Franklin's 'Think', so it's good.
