Goin' to Kansas City

Kirk Silsbee, LA CityBeat, 3 November 2006

FLYING INTO Kansas City, Missouri, you see a huge patchwork landscape of eccentric green and brown shapes that is farmland acreage. These are both separated and united by contours of highway that snake though the terrain. The roads are like Kansas City's jazz: serving as an access for anyone who would enter the area. Civic activist Anita Dixon is doing everything she can to make her town's music – specifically jazz – a beacon.
