Graham Nash: Song of a Simple Man

Geoffrey Cannon, Melody Maker, 9 November 1970

Update, 2020. I paid no attention to Graham Nash or to his band the Hollies, the close-harmony Manchester band formed in 1962 inspired by the Everly Brothers and named in homage to Buddy Holly. I preferred the originals, but my loss. Then in 1968 Graham left the Hollies and went to Los Angeles where David Crosby, formerly of the Byrds, as ever entrepreneurial, ensured that CSN was formed together in close musical harmony with Stephen Stills, formerly of Buffalo Springfield. In that long-ago pre-Reagan era I was in love with US rock and the USA generally, and saw Graham as the junior member. Very wrong, and Dave was right: Graham turned out to be the backbone of CSNY after Neil Young, formerly of Buffalo Springfield, joined the band.
