Harold Melvin & the Bluenotes: Black And Blue (Philadelphia International)

Tony Cummings, Black Music, December 1973

WELL THEY didn't quite make it with another killer. There's probably some slyly subtle reason why it was felt appropriate to put 'Cabaret' on the album, and the first track at that, but black music freaks will need airsick bags. An awful, swingy version of the show standard done with dire straightness like they're in a Hi-Los sound-alike-contest. Pain, real pain.
