SAN FRANCISCO — In the heady first days of the "San Francisco Sound," someone dubbed the city the "Liverpool of the USA." The title, though it then seemed grand — were the next Beatles really in our midst? — unconsciously predicted an unhappy ending. After all, the Mersey Sound had left the Mersey behind as fast as it was able.
