Hole: Pretty on the Inside (Caroline)

Robert Gordon, Spin, October 1991

THE WEATHERVANE continues turning, from R.E.M. to the Red Hot Chili Peppers and now, perhaps, to Sonic Youth. Coproduced by SY's Kim Gordon and Don Fleming (B.A.L.L., the Velvet Monkeys), this three-fourths-female quartet (the male plays guitar) favors the wash of guitar distortion that has stayed with the Youth through its various styles. Hole is more about the collective noise they make — alienation — than any individual song, and if it's unoriginal, it's still quite a lovely noise.
