The Harder They Come: Playhouse Theatre, London

Mike Atherton, Echoes, Summer 2008

AS AN OTHERWISE unmemorable comedian used to remark, it's the way you tell 'em. It's not much of a story on the face of it: country boy comes to the city wanting to be a star, finds fleeting fame, gets in with the wrong people, falls foul of the law, comes to a sticky and premature end. But in 1972 writer/ director Perry Henzell took this very story, set it in his native Jamaica, and made the internationally acclaimed film The Harder They Come, starring Jimmy Cliff.
