OVER THE past few years Jeff Beck has given the impression of someone wilfully squandering a brilliant career. Having established himself as one of the preeminent rock guitarists with The Yardbirds and The Jeff Beck Group he shifted gear in the mid-seventies — and with some prescience — towards a hard-edged jazz rock characterised in the albums Blow by Blow and Wired.
