When Eric Clapton left the Yardbirds in 1965, disillusioned with the commercial route they were taking, it seemed unlikely that the group would be able to replace their highly talented guitarist with one of similar merit. But the unknown Jeff Beck was to prove a more than worthy successor, his distinctive style and imaginative use of feedback and other revolutionary effects establishing him rapidly as a guitar hero in his own right.
