THE YEAR WAS 1957, when Jerry Lee Lewis' parents finally caught up with much of America and bought a TV set. According to Rick Bragg, in his biography of the rock'n'roll wild man, Elmo and Mamie believed that one day they would switch on the mysterious looking box, "wiggle the wires and turn the antenna towards some far-off tower, and there would be Jerry Lee sitting at the piano". It almost happened that way.
