WHEN NASHVILLE publisher-producer Buddy Killen first met Joe Tex in 1961, the singer already had six years of recording and performing under his belt. They hadn’t been auspicious years: despite stints with such important R&B labels as King and Ace he’d never found a true footing and seemed destined for a third division career providing pallied emulation of greater talents.
