John Hammond 1910-1987

Michael Goldberg, Rolling Stone, 27 August 1987

LEGENDARY RECORD producer and talent scout John Hammond — who played a key role in the careers of Billie Holiday, Count Basie, Benny Goodman, Aretha Franklin, Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen and many others during more than half a century in the record industry — died on July 10th at his Manhattan apartment. In his last moments, he was listening to the final notes of Holiday's 'All of Me', a classic recording made forty-six years earlier. Hammond, who had been largely confined to his apartment for the past year and a half because of a series of strokes, was seventy-six years old.
