John Legend: Eventim Apollo, London W6

Lisa Verrico, The Times, 15 October 2014

EARLY IN THIS sickly-slick show, John Legend started to tell his life story. Talking and tinkling the ivories, supper club-style, wearing a cream blazer over black trousers and a silky shirt, he switched between self-depreciating anecdotes and shameless name-dropping. He recalled an early gig at which there were "five people in attendance . . . and two of them were bartenders". Cue laughter from fans. Around the same time, he played on his first album, "and that album was The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill". Cue whoops.
